about

The Sarabande Grande Room, which features a custom Kiva Fireplace, is a bright and comfortable common space that is open for b&b guests to use during the day.

(sar • a • ban • de)

A lively dance with Spanish origins that dates back to the 16th century. Thought to have been danced with castanets, it was at one point banned for being “indecent.” The sarabande was later adapted by several baroque composers, such as LeClair, Handel and Bach.

Over the years, each new owner of the bed and breakfast has kept the name as a tradition.

What makes a b&b so special?

Unlike a conventional hotel or vacation rental unit, a traditional bed & breakfast brings a more personal feel to the experience. Where a hotel typically has a front desk, sarabande has an onsite host, who will greet you at a designated time. When you arrive, you’ll be given access to the property and a quick informational tour - this is an historic building with a few quirks. Once situated, you’ll be free to come and go as you please. Either relax in the privacy of your own room or enjoy the beautiful common areas with fellow guests.

The second portion of your visit is all about the breakfast! Every morning, a tray of hot coffee and muffins will be delivered to your room anytime after 7am. Between 8am - 10am, you’re welcome to join us in the dining nook for a delicious breakfast experience. We offer a daily special, which can range from an African-style Shakshuka to a Mexican - inspired, Huevos los Ranchos. Additionally, we always have options for guests who prefer a simpler fare.

By the end of your stay, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve found a new home away from home.

Nancy Klion, owner of the bed & breakfast, had a vision for Southwest Modern Design

nancy / owner

Nancy has lived in the Village of Los Ranchos for over 30 years. Having always admired the b&b from afar, her interests were sparked when it went on the market in 2014.  With her 3 children grown, and 2 already in college, Nancy was eager to explore the next phase of her life.  Two questions kept moving her forward... what if? why not?

After discussing the idea with her friends and family, she decided to follow a new path.

Accompanied by the advice of several professionals, Nancy began the journey of purchasing, renovating and opening sarabande b&b in the fall of 2015.  This opportunity would allow her to embrace everything she loved to do in her personal life - cook, entertain, host community events and create an environment where guests could relax and unwind.

sarabande b&b is Nancy’s vision of a bed and breakfast with a modern twist!

Jon and Amy are the on-site managers at the b&b.

amy & jon / management

Originally from Portland, OR and Indianapolis, respectively, Jon and Amy found their way to Los Ranchos by means of a house-sitting opportunity. It wasn’t long before they decided to call New Mexico home, which eventually led them to sarabande.

After joining Nancy’s team at the beginning of 2020, they’ve focused their efforts on supporting her long-term vision and growing a vision of their own. With a passion for hospitality and building connections, their interest in sustainability and local sourcing are focal points for the future of the b&b.

Because we have professional housekeeping staff, you’ll find clean rooms and thoughtful details at our b&b.

monica / lead housekeeper

Monica is a warm and welcoming mother of five whose experience as a professional house cleaner makes her a vital component of the bed & breakfast.

She has been with Nancy since the beginning and after almost 7 years, Monica has become an indispensable part of this team.  Her efficiency and hard work keep the operations at sarabande running smoothly and provides a consistent level of excellence to the guest experience.

Nancy's vision for the renovation of sarabande began with her own experience with peaceful and restful spaces: clean, straight lines; efficiency and comfort; a balance between form and function.

Working with Architects, Jon Anderson and James Lucero and designer Maia Mullen, Nancy developed a renovation plan that would not only honor the classical southwestern style of the original establishment, but also redesign the property according to her vision of simplicity and comfort.
